We've opened talks with FG on El-Zakzaky's release - NHRC
The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Bem Agwe has given insights into the steps of the commission to facilitating the release of Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of Islamic movement in Nigeria.
Agwe said the commission’s primary responsibility is resolving human abuse and related issues which El-Zakzaky’s own is not an exception, and has therefore constituted a panel to investigate the issues surrounding the detention of the Shi’ite sect leader.
Addressing El-Zakzaky’s supporters, who staged a peaceful protest at the commission’s headquarters on Thursday in Abuja, the Director of Protection and Investigation of the commission, Mr Abdulrahaman Yakubu, on behalf of Agwe, promised them release of their leader.
El-Zakzaky was arrested following a deadly clash between the Nigerian Army and members of the Shi’ite sect in Zaria, Kaduna State.
His arrest has sparked off protests by his followers as well as international condemnation from majority shi’a countries.
